Transvaginal ultrasound

In short

  • A transvaginal (internal) ultrasound uses sound waves to make images of the uterus, the uterine cavity, the ovaries and the fallopian tubes.
  • At Gynaecologie Amsterdam we usually do an internal ultrasound, and only occasionally an ultrasound through the abdomen.
  • The examination is part of a consultation; you can generally come after a referral from your GP.
  • The results are discussed with you straight away, once you are dressed again.

What is a transvaginal ultrasound?

A transvaginal ultrasound is an internal gynaecological ultrasound: sound waves are used to make images of tissues and organs. We assess the uterus, the uterine cavity, the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. There are different types of gynaecological ultrasound — internal (vaginal) and external. At Gynaecologie Amsterdam we usually do an internal ultrasound, and only occasionally an ultrasound through the abdomen.

When is a transvaginal ultrasound needed?

Assessing the uterus and ovaries with a transvaginal ultrasound is important, for example, in cases of:

  • irregular or very heavy periods
  • painful periods
  • bleeding after the menopause
  • bleeding between periods
  • abdominal pain
  • pain during sex
  • checking whether a follicle (egg sac) is growing
  • fertility treatment with letrozole at Gynaecologie Amsterdam

What happens during a transvaginal ultrasound?

For the ultrasound you take a seat on the gynaecological chair; you are given a small towel to cover yourself, and part of the ultrasound probe is gently inserted, covered with a condom and lubricant. The ultrasound is explained to you while it is being done, and you can use the towel to wipe away the lubricant afterwards.

Once you are dressed again, the ultrasound and the results of any other tests are discussed with you once more. If you still have questions at that point, please ask them. We are happy to answer your questions.
